More than twenty years after the guns fell silent on the Western Front in November 1918, the world was drawn once more into global conflict. The Second World War became the deadliest conflict in human history. Nearly one million Australians served, and close to 40,000 gave their lives. In February 1942, the bombing of Darwin brought the war to our shores for the first time.
The conflict began on 1 September 1939 with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. Two days later, Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies declared that Australia was at war with Germany, standing alongside Britain and the Commonwealth. Australian forces fought in the Mediterranean and the Middle East throughout 1940–41, and increasingly in the Pacific after Japan entered the war in December 1941. Women served with distinction too, with dedicated branches of the Army, Navy and Air Force established in 1941.
In honour of the Australians who served in the Second World War, the Royal Australian Mint presents these commemorative coins. Each coin features a wreath of red poppies—an enduring symbol of remembrance across Australia and other Commonwealth nations. Framed by sculpted leaves, the eight poppies represent the eight decades that have passed since the end of this most devastating conflict.
